The IRS’ decision triggered an important backlash from conservative Christians all over the country. In 1970, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the Federal agency in charge of tax collection, decided to withdraw tax exemptions for private Christian schools and universities which refused to desegregate, as required by the Supreme Court and the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
