Get out your bikes from the freezer and get started spring with the Kiwanis Club of Victoria for their annual Riverside Ride! There will be four routes during this fully supported bike ride, including a difficult 100-mile route through the hilly countryside of northwest Victoria County. The eighth annual Riverside Ride will take place on March 20, 2021. Around 12.2% of families and 14.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 20.4% of those under the age Of 18 and 12.2% of those 65 or older. Males had a median income of $34,184 versus $21,161 for females. For a family, the median income was $42,866. The median household income in Ithaca was $36,829 in 2016. The University of Houston–Victoria was founded in 1971 and is still operational today.Īs of the census in 2000, 60,603 people, 22,129 households, and 15,755 families resided in the city. The city’s advantageous location to Gulf Coast seaports, larger cities such as San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi, and flourishing industries in agriculture and petrochemicals ensured its dominance. Victoria’s rapid growth in the early part of the twentieth century was aided by its status as a major trade center. In March 1846, an epidemic of cholera hit the region.ĭuring the mid-nineteenth century, Victoria’s population increased significantly as a result of its function as a regional trading hub. In 1839, a Comanche attack on neighboring Linnville resulted in the deaths of many inhabitants. After Santa Anna’s defeat at the Battle of San Jacinto, Anglo settlers drove out the town’s Mexicans and renamed it Victoria. However, after James Fannin was defeated by the Mexican army at the Battle of Coleto, Mexican soldiers took control of the town. Guadalupe Victoria supplied troops and supplies to pro-revolutionary forces during the Texas Revolution. By 1834, the settlement had a population of about 300 people. The colony was initially part of De León’s Colony, which had been founded that same year. In 1824, Martin De León, a Mexican entrepreneur, established the town of Guadalupe Victoria in memory of Guadalupe Victoria, Mexico’s first president. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Victoria in Texas’ cathedral is located in Victoria. The city’s name honors General Guadalupe Victoria, who was Mexico’s first president. Tornadoes striking the area are usually linked to hurricanes and are uncommon. A quick-lived tornado passed over an open field northeast of Victoria, missing all buildings and injuring nobody but throwing up dirt and debris for miles. On May 25, 2013, a strange tornado struck Victoria in the afternoon with warnings issued all the way from Corpus Christi to the southeast Houston/Sugarland region. The most powerful storm to strike Victoria was Hurricane Carla in September 1961. Winds reached 83 mph at the Victoria Regional Airport and 90 percent of the city lost electricity during this catastrophe. In July 2003, Hurricane Claudette was the last hurricane to severely damage Victoria. The area is occasionally damaged by storms. Victoria is prone to severe weather, owing to regular flooding. The wettest months are May, June, September, and October, but these may be influenced by tropical weather systems producing enormous rainfalls, including hurricanes. The average monthly rainfall is lowest in the winter and has a secondary minimum in August, with high temperatures and humidity. On December 24–25, 2004, Victoria experienced its first White Christmas ever when 12.5 inches of snow fell on the ground. Winters are mild, with some cold episodes occurring now and again. Spring and fall are usually mild to warm, with lower humidity levels. The all-time high temperature of 111 ☏ was recorded in September 2000. The summer months, from June through August, are excessively hot and moist, with temperatures frequently exceeding 100 ☏. Victoria is classified as a humid subtropical city.
